The mission of the Howard R. Driggs
Memorial Foundation is to perpetuate
his ideals and legacy in education and
Western American history.

The death of Howard R. Driggs in 1963 concluded a remarkable life during which he became widely recognized both as a professor of English Education and as an historian of the American West.  He wrote and lectured extensively in both fields, including more than 50 books, and received many honors during his lifetime and thereafter.

Howard Driggs was the son and grandson of Mormon pioneers.  He grew up in Pleasant Grove, Utah among many other pioneer families.  Hearing their first-hand accounts inspired what became a lifelong interest in preserving their stories and those of other pioneers and trail riders for future generations.  In addition, he founded the American Pioneer Trails Association which placed historic markers along the trails and organized commemorative events throughout the country to recognize this heritage.

In one of his books, Timpanogos Town, he wrote the history of his home town.  "No town of lasting worth is ever completed," he noted.  "Its history always looks forward. ... What should persist is the sterling character, the high ideals of its founders."  He added that his goal was to "radiate the spirit of the pioneers" in order "to inspire and guide the pioneering of today and tomorrow."

That goal was a common theme expressed in works throughout his life.  Shortly after his death he was honored in a eulogy on the floor of the United States Senate by Utah Senator Frank Moss.  Two years later the Howard R. Driggs Elementary School, a new school in the Granite School District of Salt Lake City, was dedicated in his honor.

The Howard R. Driggs Memorial Foundation has been established to help preserve his legacy for future generations.
